Questions
Is it really free?
Yes. No trial, no subscription, no ads, no account. It's free for personal and commercial work, including paid boards for studios and clients.
Why do you need my email?
So the download link reaches a person, not a scraper, and so I can tell you when a new version or a fix is out. That's the only required email. Anything else is a separate, optional box, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe.
Can I share it with my team?
Send them to this site. Everyone gets their own link. Please don't pass the installer around or post it anywhere. That keeps every copy genuine and up to date.
Can I sell it, bundle it or change it?
No. Darkboard Prime is licensed, not sold, and the licence forbids reselling, re-hosting and modifying it. The one exception is what the Qt library's licence allows: you may swap in your own build of Qt. See the notices.
Is it open source?
No. It uses open-source libraries (listed in the notices), but Darkboard Prime's own code is closed. Open-source licences allow resale and changes, and the point is to keep it free and unaltered.
When is Windows coming?
The app is built for Mac and Windows from one codebase, but the Windows version isn't tested yet. Choose "Windows: tell me when" on the download page and you'll get one email when it's ready.
What pen display do I need?
Any pen display or tablet macOS supports: Wacom Cintiq, Intuos, and similar. Pressure works on every stroke. A mouse works too, but it's not what the app is for.
Can I open my boards in other apps?
A .dbp board is a zip of plain PNG images plus a small text file. Any tool can read it. Export to layered PSD for Photoshop, or to images and a movie for editorial.
Does it collect any data?
No. The app works offline and sends nothing. The site keeps the email you give it, nothing more. Privacy.
Will you add my feature?
Maybe, but probably not. Darkboard Prime is fast because it's small. Every idea sent through feedback is read and collected. Bugs come first.
